Pitch In

Privacy policy

Last updated: 25 October 2026

Who we are

Pitch In is run by Alex Hawken, a sole trader trading as Pitch In, in New Zealand ("Pitch In", "we", "us"). Pitch In is an app that helps neighbours post and take on small one-off tasks.

This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, who we share it with and your rights under the Privacy Act 2020. It applies to the Pitch In app, our website and our support channels.

Our privacy officer is Alex Hawken, reachable at privacy@alexhawken.com.

What we collect and why

We only collect what we need to run tasks safely and get people paid.

Information When we collect it Why
Name, email, sign-in provider (Apple, Google or Facebook) When you create an account To run your account and contact you about your tasks
Age band and year of birth At sign-up To apply age rules, such as daylight hours for under-18s and caregiver accounts
Profile details: first name, suburb, short bio, photo (adults only) When you set up your profile So neighbours know who they're dealing with
Home address When you post a task Only your suburb shows publicly. Your exact address is shared only with the helper you choose.
Location while sharing is on Only when you tap "Share my location" on the task day So the other person can see you're on the way. It stops when the task ends.
ID check result If you verify your ID (required for adults taking tasks with under-18s) Stripe Identity checks your document and selfie. We keep only the result (verified or not) and the date, not your document images.
Payment details When you pay in the app or set up payouts Stripe stores your card and bank details. We never see your full card number.
Tasks, messages, photos of finished work, ratings and reviews As you use the app To run tasks, resolve disputes and keep people safe
Reports, blocks and moderator notes When someone reports, blocks, or a moderator reviews To investigate safety issues and keep a record of decisions
Early Access agreement: which version you agreed to, and when. Whether you've said you help out as a business When you first open the app, or change the setting To keep a record of what you agreed to, and to show neighbours if you're in business
Device and app information: app version, crash logs, approximate usage Automatically To fix bugs and keep the service secure
Tax information for helpers (legal name, address, date of birth and IRD number), asked for once you've been paid for a task. A parent or guardian gives a young person's. Before payouts reach the reporting threshold Inland Revenue requires platforms to report helpers' earnings

We check posts, messages, bios and reviews automatically for unsafe content and contact details, including on your device using Apple Intelligence where available. Flagged content may be read by a moderator.

We don't sell your personal information or use it for advertising.

Registering interest on our website

If you tap "I'm interested" on our website, we keep whether you'd post tasks or help out, the suburb you type, and your email if you choose to give it. We use this to count interest, decide where Pitch In opens next, and email you once when it opens near you. We don't share it or use it for anything else. To have it removed, email privacy@alexhawken.com.

Young people and caregivers

People aged 13 to 17 can only use Pitch In through a family account set up by a parent or guardian ("caregiver"). Under-13s can't use Pitch In.

  • The caregiver gives us the young person's details: first name, initial, age band and suburb. We tell the young person what we hold in the app, in plain language.
  • We collect less from young people. There are no profile photos, no ID check, no in-app payouts, and their exact location is never shown.
  • The caregiver can see the young person's tasks, messages about tasks, earnings and history. They approve every task, and can pause or remove the account.
  • A caregiver PIN protects changes. It is stored only as a scrambled (hashed) value on the device and our servers, never as the PIN itself.
  • Removing a young person deletes their profile and signs out their phones. We keep the limited records described in "How long we keep it" where a safety report or dispute involves them.

A young person can ask us about their information directly at privacy@alexhawken.com, and we'll respond to them as well as their caregiver.

Who we share it with

  • The other person on a task. They see your first name, rating and suburb, and your exact address and agreed time once you're matched.
  • Service providers that run Pitch In for us:
  • Supabase: database and sign-in, hosted in Sydney, Australia
  • Stripe: payments, payouts and ID checks, in the US, Ireland and other countries
  • Apple: Sign in with Apple, notifications and on-device Apple Intelligence
  • Resend: sending our emails, such as sign-in and password reset emails, in the US
  • OpenStreetMap Foundation: maps and address look-ups on the Pitch In website, in the UK. When you use "Find on the map", the suburb or street you type is sent to look up the location; your browser also loads map images from them
  • Google and Facebook: only if you sign in with them

They may only use your information to provide their service to us. We may also share information with:

  • Inland Revenue, for helpers' earnings under the platform reporting rules.
  • Police, courts or other authorities, where the law requires or allows it, for example to prevent a serious threat to someone's safety.
  • A buyer of the business, if Pitch In is sold, under this policy.

Storing information overseas

Some of our providers store or process information outside New Zealand. We choose providers whose privacy protections are comparable to New Zealand law, and we tell you here which countries are involved.

How long we keep it

Information Kept for
Your account and profile Until you delete your account
Tasks, messages and photos 12 months after the task ends, then deleted
Live location Not stored after the task ends
ID check result While your account is open
Payment and tax records 7 years, as tax law requires
Reports, disputes and moderator decisions 2 years after they close, or longer if a legal claim is open

When you delete your account, we delete or anonymise your information within 30 days, except the records we must keep as listed above.

Keeping it secure

  • Data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
  • Access is limited by account, so you can only see your own tasks and those you're matched on.
  • Moderators see only what they need, and every time they open a private chat it is logged.
  • If a breach is likely to cause serious harm, we'll tell you and the Privacy Commissioner as soon as practicable.

Your rights

You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct it. Use Profile → Settings → Your data, or email privacy@alexhawken.com. We'll respond within 20 working days. You can delete your account at any time in the app.

If you're not happy with how we've handled your information, contact us first. You can also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (privacy.org.nz, 0800 803 909).

Changes to this policy

If we make important changes, we'll tell you in the app before they take effect. The date at the top shows the latest version.
